Aah, the most feared holiday of all the geeks…Valentine’s Day. I personally really love Valentine’s Day, regardless of what my Facebook relationship status is…I can’t get enough of it. Enough of the excuses of it being a “Hallmark holiday” and that “it’s not romantic because there is no surprise and I could just do something more special on any other day”.
Okay, sure most people spend $5 on a Hallmark card and then get a box of chocolates or a bouquet of flowers for the person they love…but are you and I those people? No. We have never been one of those. C’mon, we are waaay cooler than that.
I like to think of Valentine’s Day as an opportunity. Not necessarily an opportunity to receive or to even to give items, but just an opportunity to interact with the people that you do know and the people that you don’t know (yet). In this special post, I’m going to post some of my favorite Valentine’s Day ideas (with pictures!) along with my reasoning as to why Valentine’s Day is still a pretty great day.
- It may be one of your last chances to send cheesy kids-themed Valentines. V-day is one of the only holidays left where you can still get away with acting like a child. A couple of years ago I bought a case of those super-nerdy stickery card packs that elementary school kids give out. I put names on them, sealed them up with Hershey kisses and totally brought them to college with me & gave them to people in my cafeteria. Even the sourpusses couldn’t resist these…
P.S. Keep some extras without names & a pen handy just in case you are super forgetful like myself.
- Save the flowers for your mom. Every girl (and even some guys) have gotten flowers before. If you are going to buy flowers, buy a small bouquet for your mother! I totally give my mom Valentine’s Day gifts every year. The thought should never be ‘Oh, that person already has a significant other and they’ll be getting them something…’. It’s totally neat to give little somethings, even just a call or text to a family member or close friend that lets them know you care. In all seriousness though, if you MUST get me flowers…these are probably the neatest I’ve seen.

- Get the guy you like something that he will actually like. I suggest something that will actually bring you two together, like a video game or a Lego set! What is more romantic than getting a cool, usable gift that you can spend time playing or putting together?

Lego has all sorts of cool sets out right now including Star Wars, TMNT, The Hobbit, Lord of the Rings, Super Heroes, and their newest Chima line – you can see them all on the Toys R Us site.
- Take a chance, leave a note. If you insist that Valentine’s Day is just some cookie-cutter holiday that you can 1-UP then prove it! Wish someone you don’t know very well a good day, tell a friend or acquaintance what they mean to you, ask the guy/girl that you like out already. I did this one year by writing tiny notes on fake flower petals, stuffing them in a jar and wrapping it with ribbon with the idea of the person pulling a single one out each day until they ran out (you pick whatever special day you want that to be). If you are single, this could be a great way to get the ball rolling on someone you want to ask out by hiding a special note at the bottom.
- Make your meal epic. While everyone else is spending tons of money going out for Valentine’s Day…round up your date or a group of friends and make something at home. Don’t go for a lame spaghetti dinner though…it will never quite work out like The Lady and the Tramp made it out to be, trust me. Make something giant-ly edible just like the guys of Epic Meal Time might do. How about a giant cake-sized cupcake or hundreds of silver dollar bacon pancakes? Only you can decide.
I really think Valentine’s Day is not entirely about having a sweetheart, but instead having a sweet heart. Get it? Okay, I’m done, really, I promise. If nothing else, enjoy the delicious candies that will be on sale on February 15th.
